Skincare routine for ageing skin, focusing on barrier protection

Why Barrier Care Is Essential for Ageing Skin: A Pharmacist’s Perspective

Maintaining healthy skin as we age requires a shift in focus. While many women are conditioned to look for aggressive treatments to target fine lines, the most critical element for long-term skin health, especially during and after menopause, is often overlooked: the skin barrier.

To better understand why this becomes even more vital after the age of fifty, we spoke with pharmacist Rajesh Thakorlal to break down the science behind why our skin becomes more reactive over time and how proper barrier care can help restore its balance and strength.

How pharmacists explain skin barrier care:

The skin barrier, or the stratum corneum, sits in the outermost layer of the skin. Its primary role is to keep moisture in while preventing irritants, allergens, and bacteria from entering the skin.

Pharmacist Rajesh Thakorlal explains that the skin barrier can be understood using a “bricks and mortar” analogy. The “bricks” represent dead skin cells, while the “mortar” consists of natural oils known as lipids. When this structure is intact, the skin remains soft, hydrated, and resilient. However, when the barrier is compromised, the skin begins to lose water more rapidly. As a result, it becomes more reactive to products and environmental factors that would normally not cause irritation.

A compromised skin barrier typically presents as:

  • Persistent dryness and flaking
  • Redness and increased sensitivity
  • Breakouts or localised inflammation

The Impact of Ageing on Lipid Balance

For those navigating the skin barrier after 50, the skin's biological makeup undergoes significant changes. With ageing skin, the lipid component of the barrier not only diminishes, but also shifts in composition.

The precise ratio of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, the "mortar" mentioned earlier, falls out of balance. When these lipids are no longer present in the correct proportions, the skin barrier becomes weaker.

Furthermore, age-related hormonal changes lead to a decline in sebum (natural oil) production. This leaves ageing skin more vulnerable to moisture loss and external irritants. This is precisely why older skin tends to feel tight, flaky, and easily irritated. The focus of any effective skincare routine at this stage must be on replacing these lost lipids.

How to Care for a Mature Skin Barrier

Protecting the skin barrier requires a balanced routine that focuses on both preventing damage and rebuilding its structure.

1. Gentle Cleansing

The first step is to avoid stripping the skin. Gentle, low-foaming or non-foaming cleansers help remove impurities without disrupting the skin’s natural protective oils.

2. Rebuilding the Foundation

Once the skin is cleansed gently, the next step is to restore what has been lost. Effective barrier-supporting skincare should include ingredients that mimic the skin’s natural structure:

  • Ceramides: Help strengthen the skin barrier by repairing gaps between skin cells.
  • Cholesterol and fatty acids: Help restore lipid balance and structural integrity.
  • Glycerine: Draws moisture into the skin and supports hydration.

Consistent use of a high-quality moisturising skin lotion provides the appropriate ratio of these lipids, helping to shield the skin from the environment while it repairs.

Prioritising Long-Term Skin Health and Resilience

Ageing skin requires a specialised approach that prioritises protection over exfoliation. By focusing on replenishing the lipids that time and hormones take away, you can maintain skin that feels comfortable and calm.

As pharmacist Rajesh Thakorlal emphasises, barrier care is not about changing the skin, but about supporting its natural biology so it can function optimally at every stage of life.
